Fontaines D.C. - Romance
Having moderately enjoyed their previous album, Skinty Fia, I sat down to this album expecting much of the same that there had been before.
This album was very good.. It is the perfect mix of dark, exciting, and new. It is lyrically interesting and unique the whole way through, and while the instrumentation feels very generic on some tracks, they also show how they are capable of much more on others, which leaves the poorer songs worse off for it.
Their new producer's influence is certainly felt throughout the album, and has allowed them to expand their sound to a place that is very new for them.
Tracks such as 'Desire' take clear inspiration from the likes of Joy Division, and brings modern ideas to them, which makes for an interesting experience which can be enjoyed from a modern and an older lens.
Being the band's most experimental album yet, there were bound to be a few shortcomings, however overall this project is the band's best to date, despite leaving room for improvement.
This album makes the band's future feel bright for certain, and is a great post-punk album, which feels influences from many artists of the past, mixing their alt-rock genre with a nostaglic 2000s aesthetic. Let us hope they continue this exploratory path they are taking on future projects.
